Abstract

The article is devoted to the emergence and development of the integrative approach to human psychology and social interaction at Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia, St Petersburg. The origin of the integrative approach is rooted in the traditions of the Leningrad psychological school founded by Boris Ananyev. Research conducted by Vladimir Panferov laid the foundation for the integrative approach to human psychology and was reflected in the works of his students, followers and associates. Under his leadership numerous theses and dissertations were defended. Vladimir Panferov’s scientific school emerged in the late 1980s after three decades of gradual development and not only as a school of scientific thought, but also as an academic institution of professional training (the Department of Practical Psychology, the Faculty Psychology and Pedagogy, the Institute of Psychology). In line with the integrative approach to human psychology and social interaction, a unique system of student training based on a synthesis of natural science and the humanitarian paradigm has been created. The implementation of the integrative approach in the education system has allowed the university to train highly qualified specialists.

The main theoretical principles of the integrative approach to human psychology and social interaction, which are the outcomes of Vladimir Panferov’s decadeslong scientific research, were reflected in the monograph titled “Integrated Synthesis of Human Psychology in Science, Education, and Social Interaction”. The main ideas of the integrative approach are reflected in a number of textbooks, i. e. “Psychology”, “Fundamentals of Human Psychology”, “An Introduction to Profession: A Psychologist”, “Methodological Foundations and Problems of Psychology”, “General psychology. Theoretical Foundations”, “General Psychology. Principal Psychic Phenomena”, “General Psychological Practicum”, etc. Active development of the integrative approach continues at present: Vladimir Panferov is developing a methodology for the integral synthesis of psychological knowledge, conceptualising social perception as a mechanism for understanding human psychology in its integrity, which opens up new opportunities for psychological science.
