Introduction. Motivation is a concept widely used in modern science in various contexts. In this work, motivation is understood as an inner urge of an individual to engage in activities related to satisfying his or her needs. The motivational sphere is one of the most interesting objects of empirical study: being related to the core of personality, it is often relatively inaccessible and difficult to study. This article considers specific types of motivation — motivation for success and motivation for fear of failure. In Russia, these types of motivation are assessed through the widely used Motivation for Success and Fear of Failure (MSF) questionnaire developed by A. A. Rean. This study addresses the need to re-standardize diagnostic tools in order to prevent them from becoming outdated. Therefore, the aim of this study is to validate A. A. Rean’s MSF questionnaire in a contemporary Russian sample.
Materials and Methods. Empirical data were collected through an online survey conducted using the Yandex Forms service. The study involved 1,237 respondents: 71.5% female and 28.5% male, with a mean age of 22 years. The respondents participated in the study without payment and were completely anonymous. The instruments included the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, the Scale of General Self-Efficacy, the Express Diagnostics of Responsibility test, and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. The calculations were performed in IBM SPSS Statistics (version 23) and the IBM SPSS Amos (version 23).
Results. Cronbach’s alpha coefficients were calculated to determine the internal consistency of the questionnaire model. To verify convergent validity, correlations were examined between the questionnaire and scales from other instruments covering a similar range of psychometric characteristics, as well as scales from an opposing measure. To determine and verify the factor structure of the questionnaire, EFA and CFA methods were used, confirming a two-factor model.
Conclusion. The empirical results obtained in a contemporary Russian sample allow us to conclude that A. A. Rean’s MSF questionnaire is valid and reliable. This questionnaire can be recommended for practical applications, personality psychodiagnostics, and research purposes.
