Abstract

Introduction. Contemporary psychology seeks to identify socio-psychological resources that underpin an individual’s capacity for positive functioning. Within the eudaimonistic framework, psychological well-being is regarded as an integrative indicator of self-realization (Ryff 1996) and encompasses such components as autonomy, environmental mastery, personal growth, positive relations with others, purpose in life, self-acceptance. Research indicates that psychological health is closely associated with characteristics of the social environment, particularly the family. Emotional experiences acquired in interaction with parents largely shape the quality of interpersonal relationships in subsequent stages of development. The present study examines the relationship between attachment as an indicator of the presence/absence of interpersonal dependence and psychological well-being in students.

Materials and Methods. Empirical data were collected with the Experiences in Close Relationships questionnaire and Ryff’s Scales of Psychological Well-Being (adaptation by N. Lepeshinsky). The sample included 357 respondents aged 17–25.

Results. The majority of respondents demonstrated an anxious attachment style, while a secure attachment style was identified in 22 % of the sample. Indicators of psychological well-being were within the normative range for approximately half of the participants. Negative associations were found between attachment avoidance, attachment anxiety, and psychological well-being.

Conclusion. A secure attachment style enables individuals to build relationships grounded in security, self-worth, and a sense of personal significance. Such individuals demonstrate higher levels of positive functioning and self-realization, reflected in indicators of psychological well-being, including autonomy, environmental mastery, personal growth, positive relations with others, purpose in life, self-acceptance. In contrast, attachment avoidance and attachment anxiety are negatively associated with self-realization. The absence of secure attachment thus constrains self-realization, reduces the willingness to establish positive relationships, and limits overall psychological functioning.
