Introduction. The expansion of digital learning environments, the widespread use of personalization algorithms, and the integration of generative artificial intelligence pose new challenges for education studies and psychology, particularly through the amplification of cognitive biases among university students. The aim of this article is to identify the key cognitive biases that intensify in the digital educational environment of higher education and to determine educational resources for their prevention and remediation.
Materials and Methods. The study is based on theoretical analysis and synthesis of scholarly literature in cognitive psychology, education studies, and media studies. The focus of the study is the cognitive functioning of university students amid the digitalization of higher education. The research design included an examination of both classical and contemporary sources, as well as a comparative review of Western and Russian contributions to the topic. The literature surveyed included foundational work on heuristics and biases (A. Tversky, D. Kahneman), more recent investigations into digitally mediated cognitive distortions (B. Sparrow, E. Pariser, C. Sunstein), and relevant Russian psychological scholarship (D. N. Uznadze et al.).
Results. The findings indicate that although cognitive biases are an inherent feature of human cognition, they take on new forms of amplification and propagation within the digital environment. The analysis identifies the digital environment as a cognitive amplifier for confirmation bias, the availability heuristic, echo-chamber effects, the illusion of explanatory depth, and the Google effect. The analysis has also established their detrimental impact on students’ motivation, memory, and analytical reasoning. Based on the literature review, the study has proposed a framework of educational interventions, including metacognitive training, the infusion of digital hygiene into academic curricular, fact-checking exercises, argumentation-based assignments, and the revision of assessment practices.
Conclusion. The findings carry practical implications for the modernization of higher education. The proposed recommendations targeting metacognitive development, instructional adaptation, and deliberate use of digital tools, point toward the transformation of the digital environment from a source of cognitive risks into a resource for fostering critical thinking.
