Academic mobility as a way to increase intercultural communicative competence and students’ personal social capital

Abstract

Nowadays, every country in the world is involved in globalization, thus, intercultural contacts become an everyday reality. In this context, it is of great importance for students to develop intercultural competences in order to be successful in their future career and adult life. In this study, our aim was to explore the influence of Academic Mobility (AC) on students’ Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC). The sample consists of three groups: 34 mobile students and alumni (22 female and 12 male), 42 respondents who wanted to take part in an AC program (22 female and 20 male) and 43 subjects who did not intend to do so (28 female and 15 male). Our methods included Bogardus Social Distance Scale, INTOL Pochebut Questionnaire, Yamagishi General Trust Scale, Yusupov Polycommunicative Empathy Inventory. According to ANOVA results, the groups of participants differ in interethnic and interpersonal tolerance as well as in empathy to strangers and general empathy. Results demonstrate that mobile students have a more positive ethnic identity and personal social capital than those not involved in AC. Thus, the importance of Academic Mobility for students’ Intercultural Communicative Competence is clearly demonstrated. The paper discusses ways to improve AC programs as well as AC promotion in the Russian Federation education institutions.
