Development and psychometric verification of a technique for measuring values through actualized fears

Abstract

Introduction. The methodological relevance of the article stems from the difficulty of operationalizing the value construct. Most techniques rely on the motivational and cognitive components and do not involve the emotive component. The article turns to the emotive component and provides a psychometric verification of a new tool for assessing values through actualized fears. The technique is based on L. S. Vygotsky’s ideas about the relationship between “experiences” and “meanings”, as well as on the ideas about values and fears developed by modern authors. Fear (the strongest emotion) is interconnected with a person’s significant values viewed as his/her life principles. The technique makes it possible to obtain the information about the hierarchy of values, priorities of fears and the content of value preferences.

Materials and Methods. For psychometric verification of the technique, N = 300 respondents aged 18–25 years were examined, of which 60% were female. The following methods were used: Schwartz’s values questionnaire, the questionnaire of the hierarchical structure of actual fears (Yu. V. Shcherbatykh, E. I. Ivleva), the author’s methodology for measuring the type of mentality (V. I. Pishchik), the questionnaire of faith (Harris Interactive), the methodology “The development of my ecological consciousness” (A. P. Sidelikovsky). Statistical methods of data processing included Spirman correlation analysis, Cronbach's alpha, exploratory factor analysis, Kendall’s W criterion.

Results. It is shown that the technique is relatively internally consistent. There is an internal consistency of the points of the technique. The technic is based on a theoretical construct which is associated with a similar construct of values proposed by S. Schwartz. Value-related fears were combined with fears measured by other methods.

Conclusions. The technique can be used in pedagogical and psychological contexts of study of values. Psychometric verification of the technique should be continued on a larger sample taking into account age, gender and situational factors.
